Until the SD990IS came along, I always considered myself as a "poor man's" professional photographer. As such, I like to think that I know something about point and shoot cameras.
Canon has recently come out with several new models, and for some reason I have tried just about all of them. Up to this point, the SD990IS is the only one that has stolen my picture taking heart. So, I whipped out my trusty Visa, got a GREAT price at Amazon.com, and the rest is history.
First off, the SD990IShas some WAY cool features!
Face detection is a feature taht has recently become the rage in the point and shoot world. The Canon SD990IS also has a self timer, which is a feature that every point and shoot fan must have used somewhere along the line.
True to it's Canon form, face detection works VERY well with this sd990is, possibly even better than with any other camera I tried. Although I must say that the SD780IS was good, too. It works especially well when I take pictures indoors.
If I had to gripe a little bit, group shots outdoors can get tricky. In bright sunshine, for example, things can get a little dicey. Sometimes, faces are not properly illuminated, colors get a little washed out, but these are really just petty annoyances. By in large, the SD990IS produces breathtaking shots, several of which I have matted and framed.
The image sensor is able to handle an amazing 14.7 megapixels! In real life, the reality is that you will rarely use anything much above a 9. Sometimes at this resolution, problems can begin to arise. You are bound to produce a noisy shot with an ISO of as small as 250 when going above 9MP.
The colors createdby the SD990ISare vivid and sharp. The clarity and realistic qualities of your shots will amaze you! The majority of Canon point and shoots that I tested will go overboard on vivid colors. This can be a hassle unless you really like post processing.
I really have a passion for photographing family outdoor activities, so we all have shared memories. The post processing on 200 shots just to adjust the color balance, can get a bit old.
The bottom line is that the sd990is is quite simply the best point and shoot camera I've owned or tested. The full range of features are useful to expert, as well as novice photographers.
The giant amount of megapixels is a little overkill, somewhat like having a car that can go 160 m.p.h.
Just like people never drive their cars that fast, nobody will use or need all those megapixels. However, to dwell on the topic of extra megapixels, with a camera that is generally so flawless, is splitting hairs. Thank you Canon for the SD990IS!
